"Babe Ruth"

This is our first time with Little League.  Well, we did Little League when Connor was in 1st grade in Rhode Island...but that was coach pitch so it doesn't count.  Little League is REALLY serious and competitive.  Nothing like we are used to from Army Youth Sports in Hawaii and Germany.

Little League was definitely intimidating for Connor (and me too)!
From the first assessments (tryouts), Connor and I both stood there with our mouths hanging open.  The level that these kids play at was nothing that we had experienced before.  The last 2 baseball seasons in Germany were very low key, barely enough kids to make up a team.  But here, man, there are baseball players everywhere.   And we met former professional baseball players that are active in Little League and offer private sessions.   This was intense!

And then there's the team.  Thankfully, we had 2 friends on the team so that was a relief.  I might have played the Army card that I am a geographical single parent...and asked to be with at least one friend in case of help needed.   And very thankful that the league
did accommodate my request.

But the team was tough, not so friendly to newcomer's.  So Connor, Mason and Zachary had each other.   But the others, well, they were there to play baseball.  Definitely not there to socialize or get to know each other.

It was a rough season for me as a mom, and Connor as a player.  He complained more than he enjoyed it.  Until about 2 weeks ago.  And he started hitting the ball!    His batting coach calls him "Babe Ruth" now and what a difference from the beginning of the season.  Two base hits and an RBI in one game, a Triple in another game, and then the unforgettable Home Run in yesterday's game.   The team lost, and Connor was disappointed and very grumpy because he really wanted them to advance to the final playoff game next week.  It's exciting for me as a baseball mom (with the stress of getting to practices and games for Connor, dance classes for Amelia) that all of this time and effort was worth it.  Finally, he clicked with baseball in a way that brings tears to my eyes.  I told Connor that my grandfather, PopPop, loved baseball more than anything.  He would be so proud of Connor.   And how PopPop would have loved to watch our little Babe Ruth hit that ball on Saturday...

Little stinker! I had to run to the store. Scott was packing up the garage but heard something and went upstairs. Amelia's door was closed (suspicious bc it's usually open halfway at least). He tried to open the door, and something was propped against it. She didn't hear him...so he got these pictures before she realized he was there. She had a flashlight and was reading. AND THEN, she blames me apparently because I didn't read to her tonight. Well, is she going to hear it from me in the morning! I didn't read to her because I let her swim extra tonight so she went to bed way past her bedtime. I can't wait for this conversation at breakfast😉

They are sure enjoying the pool!
